Homeopathic Practice
As from 1950 the Faculty of Homeopathy in the United Kingdom is officially acknowledged, by Act of Parliament, as a postgraduate training establishment for doctors, with the objective of ‘advancing and extending the principles and practice of homeopathy’. Its remit has subsequently been extended to other recognised health professions, including veterinary surgeons, dentists, pharmacists and midwives.
Under Common Law all practitioners have a duty of care towards their patients, and non- medically qualified individuals are prohibited from treating specific illnesses and medical conditions, for example cancer and venereal disease. Non-medically trained homeopaths, acupuncturists, and herbal medicine practitioners are registered and self-regulated in their own individual councils.
Directive 2001/83/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the Community code relating to medicinal products for human use, which includes homeopathic medicinal products, was transposed into the Medicines Amendment Regulations 2005 (SI 2005/2753). It contains the amendments for Homeopathic Medicinal Products for Human Use.
